Dear Colleagues,

We cordially invite You to participate in the Seminar and wish you interesting reports and fruitful discussions. I Ukranian- Polish Interdisciplinary Seminar (I UPIS or Seminar) is the result of long-term cooperation between the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and the University of Silesia in Katowice. In 1994, the rector of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv Prof. Ivan Vakarchuk and the rector of the University of Silesia in Katowice Prof. Maxymilian Pazdan signed an agreement on scientific cooperation between the Universities.

Since 1995, the Institute of Materials Engineering of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Departments of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Ivan Franko Lviv National University have been cooperating on the topic of amorphous alloys and the study of their properties.

The purposes of the Seminar are: to be a scientific platform for the presentation and discussion of scientific research; exchange of scientific ideas and experience in the field of chemistry and materials science.

Best Regards,

Scientific and Organizing committees of the Seminar

About Us

Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine

Ivan Franko National University of Lviv is a classical higher educational establishment with powerful scientific schools, old traditions and modern innovation approaches. Its principal aim is to provide high educational and scientific standards, cultural, social needs of a person, the society and state in the process of training highly qualified specialists. The University activity is formed on the grounds of preserving Ukrainian culture and traditions, developing national consciousness and identity.

More information about Ivan Franko National University of Lviv available at the link: About University – Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. The history of teaching chemistry and scientific research in the branch of chemistry at Lviv university goes back to 1784 when the first chemical laboratory was founded. In 1851 the department of chemistry was opened, which was the beginning of modern chemistry departments and chemistry faculty. The foundation of the department and the laboratory have synchronized with the period of intensive accumulation of experimental data in the field of organic chemistry, fast development of the industry of aniline dyes, and the pharmaceutical industry. It also explains the fact, that scientific research of the chemists of universities was concerned mainly with organic chemistry till the beginning of the ХХ century. In 1894 the chemistry department moved to the special building (nowadays – Kyrylo & Methody Str., 6/8). In July 1895 chemistry department was divided into the department of organic chemistry and the department of inorganic chemistry. In 1935 the department of physical chemistry was separated from the department of inorganic chemistry. The chemical faculty of Lviv university was founded in the 1944-1945 academic year consisting of four departments: inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physical and colloidal chemistry. In 2024, the department of life safety was added to the faculty.  More information about the Faculty of Chemistry and scientific schools operating on its basis are available at the link:  Welcome – Хімічний факультет

University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland

University of Silesia in Katowice, one of the largest and most dynamically evolving Polish higher education institutions, offers innovative solutions in the field of education and a friendly space for conducting research. University employees, students and young scientists, working individually and in teams, address themes crucial at the regional, national and global level. They conduct research into land- and sea-dwelling wildlife, analyse climatic changes, search for solutions aimed at combatting poverty, hunger and social inequalities. They are committed to shaping the societies of the future and the results of their research contribute to improving the conditions and quality of life of the people. They develop efficient drugs and modern materials, investigate world and national cultural heritage. They teach how to think critically, how to be sensitive to words and indefatigable in asking questions. They create art and participate in numerous artistic events. They act responsibly, creatively and boldly. They eagerly dwell on their scientific passions, popularize knowledge and educate future generations. Expanding the borders of what is known, they are fearlessly reshaping our reality.  More information about University of Silesia in Katowice available at the link: about us | Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach, The Institute of Materials Engineering was created by merging the Institute of Materials Science and the Institute of Technology and Mechatronics as a result of the reorganization of the organizational structure of the University of Silesia in 2019.

The Institute of Materials Science was created from the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Metals, which was established in 1974 by the decision of the Minister of Science, Higher Education and Technology at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the University of Silesia. Thanks to the Ministry’s decision, the organizational framework included loose forms of scientific and didactic cooperation between physicists, chemists and metallurgists, whose subject of interest was the structure and properties of metals and their alloys. The initiator and first Director of the Institute was Prof.  Zbigniew Bojarski, thanks to whom cooperation with industrial units and industry institutes in Silesia was initiated in a relatively short time, undertaking various research works, providing expert opinions on their orders, and enriching the equipment and methodological potential. In 1982, the Institute of Metal Physics and Chemistry became part of the Faculty of Technology of the University of Silesia. By continuing scientific research in the field of metals and alloys and extending it to other materials, such as polymers, ceramics, biomaterials, composites, and by undertaking the implementation of departmental and central research plans and contracts for commissioned research, the Institute has enriched its research equipment and educated its own staff. Thanks to this, in 2003 it was possible to change the name of the Institute to the current one – Institute of Materials Science and it became part of the Faculty of Computer Science and Materials Science. Today, the Institute has consolidated its scientific and teaching position among units dealing with materials engineering and science as the first university unit in the country with this research profile. Since the academic year 2007/2008, he has been running his own course of study in the field of materials engineering, specializing in materials science at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd level of education.
